Maserati Birdcage on board at the Spa Classic 2011
The Spa Classic 2011 featured a race for Italian sports car built before 1966. On pole was the Maserati Type 61 better known as the Birdcage on account of the intricate spcaeframe chassis. The car was driven by German historic racer Max Werner and he thoughtfully mounted an on-board camera to capture the race.
The four cylinder Birdcage may have been at something of a power disadvantage on Spa's long straights but that didn't stop him from mixing it was a more powerful Ferrari 250SWB and 275GTBs. There are also a couple of Iso Grifo A3C's in the video (or possibly Bizzarini 5300s as the shape or those cars is almost identical), one of which is very smoky.
There is no commentary but this is still one of the best in car films I have seen in a while. Max's determination to mix it with the bigger GT cars should be commended especially when you notice how much crash protection the Birdcage doesn't have!.
