Gymkhana Four hoons through Universal Studios
After you've hooned you're way though abandoned desert airports and decrepit French race tracks, there's really only one logical next step - Hollywood! Ken Block, the skateboard shoe mogul, turned viral internet sensation, turned WRC driver, has introduced the forth installment in his Gymkhana series, and this time Universal Studios, California is his backdrop.
Watching the first few minutes, you might get the impression that Block's Gymkhana has jumped the shark. The blockbuster movie aping opening credits are obviously meant to be ironic but despite this, it just feels like it's trying a little too hard to make fun of itself, and though the entire point of these things is to sell shoes and hoodies, you get the feeling that the DC (Block's shoe company, not us) marketing department has been give a little more influence than before.
Luckily, once the driving starts, all the cheese is quickly forgotten. Block skids his Ford Fiesta through the Universal Studios theme park and back lots with incredible precision. New camera techniques, such as the mounted camera shift also add to the spectacle. All the signature stunts, like donuts around a moving Segway are present and expanded upon, but there are also plenty of new ideas. We won't ruin it, but the dude in the Bigfoot costume on the ladder deserves some kind of metal.
