The Way Rallying Should Be: La Carrera Panamericana

Vintage rally awesomeness from Mexico.

If you were to create a racing series from the ground up, what would it be like? First of all, you'd probably want a diverse group of cars in the field. Maybe a few 911s, some Stingray Corvettes, a sprinkling of Volvo P1600s, a dollop of Alfa Romeos and some vintage American iron including a few flathead Fords for good measure. Secondly, you'd want to hold it on open roads, preferably somewhere remote and untamed. How does the middle of nowhere in Mexico sound?

If that's what you would have come up with, then unfortunately you're out of luck, because someone has already done it. La Carrera Panamericana is an homage to the original rally which was run from 1950 through 1955, but if you think the new version is a bunch of trailer queens being nursed through the course, then think again. These guys are not hanging about and the speed that some of the 50-year-old American cars are able to carry though the corners is staggering. Check out the 911 driver who learns an important lesson about lift-off oversteer in a rear-engine car!

Pay attention, WRC!
